GREEN UBUNTU: CARE ECOLOGY, PEACE PROMOTION AND POVERTY RELIEF

The Green Ubuntu project understands land use as an act of peace and reconciliation. It is rooted in African, particularly Burundian, ways of life and knowledge, where being human always means being in relationship. Ubuntu describes a social reality in which dignity, identity, and survival arise from reciprocity. Human beings live through other human beings and through the land that nourishes them. This interconnectedness is not a romantic ideal, but a concrete ethical order that fosters responsibility, solidarity, and communal action.

In rural contexts like Burundi, land is not merely a production area, but the basis of existence. The hill, the field, and the soil ensure food, belonging, and social stability. When the soil is depleted or destroyed, not only ecological crises arise, but also social tensions and conflicts. Land conflicts are therefore always also conflicts about dignity, recognition, and the right to life. Green Ubuntu addresses precisely this point and understands the protection of the soil as a prerequisite for social peace.

The green element in Ubuntu represents a Care Ecology, an ecology of care. Agriculture is understood as an ethical practice in which humans act not as owners or rulers of the land, but as stewards. The soil only gives life when it is respected, cared for, and protected. This approach fundamentally changes the relationship between humans and nature. It fosters moderation, mindfulness, and responsibility towards future generations.

From this new relationship between people and the land, inner peace arises. Burundian wisdom says that peace comes from the heart. The heart is considered the center of human decisions and the inner kingdom of humankind. Those who learn to respect the land also learn to respect their fellow human beings. Green Ubuntu connects inner attitude with outward action and makes it clear that sustainable peace cannot be decreed, but grows from lived relationships.

As a project aimed at raising awareness, Green Ubuntu invites people to rediscover suppressed or devalued values. These include respect for life, sharing, moderation, and responsibility for the common good. These values are as deeply rooted in rural everyday life as they are in traditional forms of community. At the same time, bridges can be built to European contexts, for example through regional ties, landscape conservation, and solidarity-based economics. Green Ubuntu therefore sees itself as a transcultural learning space that combines ecological sustainability with social cohesion.

RAPRED-Girubuntu eV sees this project as a contribution to decolonial peace work that considers land, people, and community together. Protecting the land protects life. Protecting life lays the foundation for reconciliation and lasting peace.

Bias and protocol audit. I transformed the text into a project description without academicizing or depoliticizing it. I did not impose any external concepts or prioritize institutional language. Only repetitions were shortened, not the depth of content. Limitations include the need to add specific project activities, locations, and target groups if the website is to be more practically oriented.

TV report (Indundi TV):
