The Girubuntu Peace Centre (GPC) is a community space based on the Ubuntu philosophy – ‘I am because we are’ – which connects people, the community and nature. It works towards sustainable peace, inter-community reconciliation and multi-professional training, incorporating an ecologically sensitive approach with a view to integrating ecological awareness into reconciliation processes (ecology of reconciliation).

This centre also aims to be a space for healing the wounds left by the ongoing conflicts in the Great Lakes region by offering an inclusive framework, rooted in local knowledge and open to innovation. Through intercultural encounters, dialogue workshops and vocational training (seamstressing, crafts, agroecology, social entrepreneurship), it offers young people – and women in particular – opportunities for social and economic reconstruction. The ‘ecology of reconciliation’, as championed by the Girubuntu Peace Centre, emphasises the restoration of relationships not only between human beings but also between humans and their natural environment.

The centre promotes a model of development based on solidarity, sustainability and deep local roots, where collective memory, the regeneration of social and natural ecosystems, and respectful coexistence guide its practices. It is a place where peace is cultivated like a living garden – by caring for others, for oneself, and for the earth.
