The Girubuntu Peace Academy (GPA) is an initiative of RAPRED-Girubuntu e.V., which arose from a collaboration between the Department of Caritas Studies and Christian Social Work (Faculty of Theology) at the University of Freiburg and the Ackermann Community. The Department of Caritas Studies and Christian Social Work provides university-level affiliation and contributes to the quality assurance of the Girubuntu Peace Academy.

The GPA pursues four basic strategies:

  1. Interdisciplinary research in cooperation with various partners and publication in a book series at LIT Verlag under the title "Peace – Reconciliation – Future. Africa and Europe: Studies of the Girubuntu Peace Academy".

  2. The Freiburg Peace Talks (FFG) , a kind of “forum politicum” that takes place in a closed room, allows politicians and members of civil society from post-war areas to come together to reflect on issues of peace and reconciliation.

  3. Organization of international symposia, seminars, and conferences , primarily at the University of Freiburg and in cooperation with partner universities and organizations. The contributions are documented and published.

  4. The establishment of a research, peace and reconciliation network with partner universities and civil society organizations (CSOs) in the Great Lakes region of Africa (Burundi – Rwanda – Democratic Republic of Congo).

Freiburg Peace Talks

"Forms of remembrance after experiences of war and violence"

"Forms of Remembrance after Experiences of War and Violence" by Stefan P. Teppert:

Africa, particularly the Great Lakes region, suffers from a painful past. The history of Rwanda and Burundi, in particular, is rife with civil wars, atrocities, and genocide that have never been fully addressed and processed. A conference held on September 11, 2020, at the Catholic Academy of the Archdiocese of Freiburg, focused on the question of whether remembering the past is a path to creating lasting peace, within the context of a dialogue between Africa and Europe.
